Nothing is off the table when it comes to new £46m tribute statue to late Queen

In his last will and testament, Mercury left half of his estate to Mary Austin, who he described as his «common-law wife,» per Smooth Radio. Austin inherited the Kensington mansion they shared together, as well as the majority of his possessions, such as his art collection. The rest was divided among family members, with friends and romantic partners such as Jim Hutton and Peter Freestone receiving six-figure cash gifts or property. Before long, Mercury’s home became a place of pilgrimage for countless fans, who came to pay their respects and offer their condolences.

Certainly, he didn’t let his massive fame stop him from visiting popular London gay venues like Heaven and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Actress Cleo Rocos wrote in her 2013 memoir that she, Mercury and comedian Kenny Everett even managed to sneak Princess Diana into the latter venue by disguising her in drag. “Iʼve stopped going out, whatever, and to be honest Iʼve almost become a nun. I thought sex was a very important thing to me because I lived though sex, and now Iʼve gone completely the other way. You see, Iʼm one of those people who can go from black to white; I donʼt like intermediary measures or anything. And yes, it HIV/Aids has frightened me to death and I have stopped having sex.

People flocked to their stall just as keen to chat as to try on the clobber. He also sang for heavy blues-rock band Sour Milk Sea (named after a George Harrison song) and eventually pitched up in the experimental Smile who became – tah dah – Queen whose own name was both regal and deliberately arch. He loved champagne and liked to collect art, once spending more than $400,000 on a set of hand-painted china. Always one for a party, Mercury threw himself elaborate celebrations; for one particular birthday, he flew a group of friends to the island of Ibiza. The occasion was marked by fireworks and flamenco dancing.

The band threw parties to celebrate album releases and band milestones to which they felt free not to invite any members of the ‘fourth estateʼ. The parties grew in legend; they assumed the status of Bacchanals. While the more extreme stories of parties at which dwarves with bowls of cocaine on their heads circulated among the Queen Fanzone guest were never fully substantiated, those days were (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) wild times.

With his friend Tim Staffell, Brian May started a band called 1984 in the mid-1960s. The band broke up after a short time, then May started another band, teaming up with two fellow college students, Tim Staffell and Roger Taylor. They called themselves Smile with Roger Taylor on drums and vocals, Tim Staffell on vocals and bass, and Brian May on guitar and vocals. Tim Staffell became friends with another college student, Farrokh «Freddie» Bulsara (to be later known as Freddie Mercury) and Freddie became a big fan of Smile and encouraged them a lot. Later on, Tim left Smile to join Humpy Bong, and Freddie subsequently joined the band on vocals and piano in 1970.

He had two remarkable relationships, one with Mary Austin and one with Jim Hutton, both complicated and both long-term. Hutton was with Mercury for seven years before the star’s death; Austin, Mercury’s first serious relationship, was told by the musician where to bury his ashes. Of course one cannot overlook the 1972 project that Fred undertook as the mythical glam rock beast Larry Lurex where he collaborated with Robin Cable at Trident Studios in 1972.

Bulsara was born to Parsi parents who had emigrated from India to Zanzibar, where his father worked as a clerk for the British government. As a child, Bulsara was sent to a boarding school in Panchgani, Maharashtra state, India. Artistically inclined from an early age, he formed a band there in which he played the piano. When Zanzibar became part of the independent country of Tanzania in 1964, Bulsara moved with his family to Feltham, England. He later studied graphic art and design at Ealing Technical College and School of Art (now part of the University of West London), graduating in 1969.

Walsh stated, “Freddie was a complete a—,” but “The rest of the guys were great…gay, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but great,” per Queen Concerts. So, whether you are revisiting Queen’s music or discovering it for the first time, now is the perfect time to stream Bohemian Rhapsody on Prime Video and experience the life of Freddie Mercury through Rami Malek’s transformative performance. Despite the film receiving only a 60% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it achieved box office glory, grossing over $903.6 million worldwide, cementing its status as one of the highest-grossing biopics of all time.

The last bits, piecing it together, were more important than any of the rest of it. To be honest, in a way the best judge we had was tonight when we listened back to it, because we just hadnʼt got the time to listen back to it before. The truly iconic Queen did not begin until Queen II and even then the band found themselves visually before they did musically. Theyʼd begun working with the photographer Mick Rock, noted for his pictures of David Bowie and, earlier, Pink Floydʼs Syd Barrett. Queen I, released on July 13, 1973, sold reasonably in America, and the single, Keep Yourself Alive, was championed by the Old Grey Whistle Test. For some reason or another, Queen were hugely popular in Taunton.

In the track’s final version, May sang the last verse as Mercury felt unable to do so. At age eight, Mercury was sent to a boarding school in India.2 The school, St. Peters English Boarding school in Panchgani, was about 50 miles outside the city of Bombay (now called Mumbai). At age ten, he was named the school champion of Table Tennis. When he was twelve, he received a trophy called the Junior All-rounder. With a sound that has been described as a fusion of hard rock and glam rock, Queen had an even bigger hit the following year with their fourth album, A Night at the Opera (1975).

Members of two bands composed of university and art-school students combined to form Queen in London in 1971. Aided by producer Roy Thomas Baker, Queen shot up the international charts with its third album, Sheer Heart Attack (1974). A Night at the Opera (1975), one of pop music’s most expensive productions, sold even better. Defiantly eschewing the use of synthesizers, the band constructed a sound that was part English music hall, part Led Zeppelin, epitomized by the mock-operatic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Britain’s top single for nine weeks. Spectacular success followed in 1977 with “We Are the Champions” and “We Will Rock You”—which became ubiquitous anthems at sporting events in Britain and the United States. The Game (1980), featuring “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Another One Bites the Dust,” was Queen’s first number one album in the United States.
